2012
Crowborough Challenge: Boats with no metal !
For
2012, the challenge is to make a self-powered model boat that can travel 20
meters across the lake without using any metal in its construction. The
boats can be a maximum of 2 feet in length (approx 600mm). Competitions will be
held for these on the fourth Sunday in May and June. At each event there will be
four challenges:
straight
running (scoring points for accuracy between buoys)
a
straight race
a
concours d'elegance for the most realistic model
nomination
(guess the time your model will take to travel the course).
Suggestions
for powering without using metal could be sail, balloon, rubber band etc.
Fireworks, explosives or anything dangerous are not allowed. Whilst the wind
direction cannot be relied upon, the course will be set out approximately down
wind and it will be no more than twenty meters in length.
…..but
don’t forget to get out last year’s
boats (see below)
Solar
Boats
The
solar boats from 2011 will also be run over the same course at the events
scheduled for the 2012 challenge. If you have one, bring it along. If you
haven’t you could still make one!
The challenge for 2011 was to build a free-running solar powered model boat, no larger than 205mm x 65mm and no heavier than 160gm. to compete in events to be held in the summer at Centenary lake. Design your own or use the plans from the club. Two 60mmx60mm solar panels and a 3-6volt solar motor are available from MUTR for about £11.00

The
small size of the boats enables them to be used for other events such as the
original MMI solar challenge around a table-top rain guttering course.
